Network Security. What does that really mean? What is your network?
Your network is all of your computers that are connected at your office. Your network security would be securing all of those devices that are on your network. So that would be your computers, your servers, your wireless, your mobile devices and anything else like your printers and anything else that is connected to that network.
That means securing the devices. That also means securing people trying to get to those devices so that they connect in a secure way. It means making sure that the device that are on the network don’t have viruses. It means making sure that the devices are patched. It means that if people are working remotely that they have a secure way to get in remotely.
This has be done in an ongoing way. This isn’t a once and done kind of thing. Even if you just got a new firewall, that firewall needs to be patched and updated from time to time. The settings on the firewall need to be continuously tweaked so that you have the best settings on the firewall for your network.
There also needs to be someone watching the devices on the network to make sure that nothing suspicious is happening. To make sure there are no mobile devices that are spamming. Making sure there are no computers on the network, even if there are guests on the network, that the guests are properly separated out. Making sure the guests aren’t doing anything they shouldn’t be doing.
We also need to make sure that if something does happen that those devices are immediately dealt with. This is where GetMorePC comes in handy. We watch our networks for our clients. We make sure that they are safe and secure. We make sure there are no mobile devices on there.
Recently one of the business owners of one of my companies got a laptop from somebody he had to let go with a professional organization that he was a part of. Upon assuming control of this laptop, he just brought it onto his wireless network and started using it. Well I noticed that this thing had a virus on it just from the network. I didn’t have any software on it. I noticed on his network that it had his laptop started to communicate out in ways that it should not have.
I contacted him and said, “Hey, what’s the deal here? Did some vendor bring in this laptop?” I didn’t know what it was. He said, “Well, actually it was me. I brought in this laptop. We have taken ownership of it from this professional organization that we are part of and I wanted to start using it.” I said, “Look, we need to clean this thing up because it has bugs on it.”
It was actually being managed by another device that was trying to call home to momma. It was not good for him. It shouldn’t have been on his network without being brought to our attention first. But we can’t always enforce policy like that. I sent him a file and he installed it on the computer. The computer got cleaned up and all is well now. But it could have been really bad.
It’s always good to have a friend in the business keeping an eye on your systems and always making sure that nobody is trying to get into your network. And if they are, that they are unsuccessful.
